Kentucky Handgun Instructor Schools & Instructors

The state of Kentucky allows the carrying of handguns in the 'open' without any license or permit by Law Abiding Citizens.  However, the state of Kentucky has a law that requires anyone (outside of the Law Enforcement Community, and certain military categories), to have a valid Carry License or Permit to carry a concealed weapon.  The license issued in the state of Kentucky to carry concealed weapons is called the:

Carrying Concealed Deadly Weapons License.

Steps in the application process for a CCDW License.

  1. Applicant finds a CCDW instructor to conduct the course.
  2. After completion of the CCDW training course, the 'certified' instructor sends the applicants information regarding passing or failing the training.
  3. Within fifteen (15) days of receiving this informaion, the DOCJT will issue a Certificate of Training if the applicant passed, or notify the applicant that they will not be receive the Certificate of Training.
  4. If the applicant has passed and been issued a Certificate of Training, application, and $ 60 fee, to their County Sheriff.
  5. Within a five (5) days period, the Sheriff sends the application and any additonal information to the Kentucky State Police.
  6. The Kentucky State Police conduct a criminal background investigation to determine if the applicant meets all the guidlines, to be issued a CCDW License or be denied.  The time line for this procedure is ninety (90) days.
  7. If the applicant has been cleared to be issued a CCDW License, the Kentucky State Police notify the individual to pick up the CCDW License from their County Sheriff.


One of the requirements to be issued the Kentucky CCDW License, is the completion of a formal training class conducted by individuals 'certified' by the state of Kentucky as CCDW Instructors.  Every County Sheriff in Kentucky has a list of the instructors who conduct the training in their county.  Here is a list by county, of the instructors.
