The Tennessee law went into effect on October 1, 1994. The law has gone through some revisions since 1994. This publication will help the reader in obtaining a Tennessee "Handgun" permit, will keep current permit holders abreast of new changes in the law and; it is also intended to assist residents from reciprocal states to become familiar with the Tennessee permit law. Handgun ownership is not the intent of this publication. It is meant as a reference source on the Tennessee Carry Law. Since Tennessee has reciprocity in the law, we have included other states that Tennessee permit holders are legal in. Over time, there will be more states added to this list. We will update this booklet when other states establish reciprocity with Tennessee. If you want to be kept informed on permit laws, incidents regarding permit/license holders in Tennessee and in the mid south, you can subscribe to our monthly newsletter. Newsletter subscription information. At the time of publishing this booklet, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Virginia were the only states that have established reciprocal agreements with Tennessee. We address these and other states starting on page 31. However other states such as Kentucky, are currently working in their State Legislature to iron out their state law to reciprocity. It will not be long before the list of reciprocal states grows. We hope this publication will assist in learning about the Tennessee law and the reciprocal states. We sincerely hope you find the content of this booklet beneficial.
