Tennessee & Michigan Sign Reciprocity Agreement

The states of Michigan and Tennessee are now reciprocal states.  This has been confirmed by the Tennessee Department of Safety and the office of the Attorney General of Michigan.

This agreement affects legally armed residents of Michigan more than it does legally armed residents of Tennessee.  This is  because Tennessee Handgun Permits were honored in Michigan prior to the signing of the reciprocal agreement but, legally armed Michigan residents were not legal to carry their handguns in Tennessee.  Now, residents of both states who have the authorization to carry handguns, may carry their handguns in both states.

Difference in carrying handguns in Michigan versus Tennessee:

MODE OF CARRY

MICHIGAN: Concealed State.

Tennessee: Concealed or Open [ exposed ] Carry is allowed.

LAW ENFORCEMENT NOTIFICATION:

MICHIGAN:

An individual licensed to carry a concealed pistol who is stopped by a police officer in Michigan, shall immediately disclose to the police officer that he or she is carrying a concealed pistol either on their person or in their vehicle.

TENNESSEE:

It is not mandatory to advise a law enforcement officer that the person is armed.  It is suggested that a legally armed citizen advise a law enforcement officer that they are armed, if in fact they are carrying a loaded pistol on their person or in their vehicle. It is strongly suggested that a legally armed citizen advise the peace officer that they posses the authority [a CCW license or handgun permit], to carry the handgun[s] before they tell the officer they are armed.

NOTE: Lets face it, if the officer feels that they should have been told but were not told about the gun, you might wind up getting more tickets than you know what to do with, no matter what the law says!  Some will say that this is unreasonable.  Well, why spend the time arguing about the tickets...just let him or her know your legally armed. Your no threat to them

NOTE:  Michigan Pistol Free Areas

A pistol is subject to immediate seizure if the CCW permit holder is carrying a pistol in a "pistol free" area.  It might also cost some money for this violation.  Here is the offense & fines imposed:
